Noonewantstolistentoapolite,butpersistentelderlyman,Mr.Johnson,whohasastrangetheoryabouttherecent"stockingmurders"ofthreeyoungwomen.Histheory?Thatthethirdmurderwascommittedbyacopycatkiller.Firsttheoldman,arminghimselfwithaphonyname,goestothepolice,gettinganaudiencewiththeverylieutenantwholedtheinvestigation,andthelieutenantdismisseshistheory,butnotbeforebrieflyconcedingthepointthattheprimesuspect,alreadyincustody,confessedtoonlytwoofthethreemurders(havingnothingtolose,itwouldseem,byconfessingtothethird).Next,Mr.Johnson,usinganotheralias,seeksandfindsanewspaperreporter,whoisboozingitupwithafloozy-bychance,theveryreporterwhocoveredthestory,andMr.Johnsonandhisideasarenotonlydismissedonceagain,butthecondescendingbartenderpracticallythrowstheoldmanoutthedoor.Finally,atwit‘send,Mr.Johnson,nolongerhidingbehindafalsename,consultswithapriestandseemstobeonthevergeofconfessingsomethinghorriblehimself.Afterall,heseemstoknowwaytoomuchaboutthelifeofthelastmurdervictim.Still,thewell-meaningpriestfindstheoldmanisguiltyofnothingmorethananunseemlyobsessionwithatabloidstory.Thepolicemustknowwhatthey‘redoing,don‘tthey?Feelingutterlyignored,Mr.Johnsongoeshometohiswife,andevenshechideshimfor"thinkingaboutthingstoomuch."
