Thereisn’treallyaplottodiscuss,thefilmisasimplecollectionofvignettesshowingOrozcoatworkwithsomeclipssplicedinthatshowwhattheneighborhoodheworksinislike.Tsurisaki’scamera,unsurprisingly,leavesnothingtotheimaginationandnoneofwhatyouseeinthisdocumentaryisfaked.Corpsesarecutopenquickly,theirinnardsremoved,theirtorsoscleanedoutandchemicallytreated.Atonepointafaceispulledbackfromtheskullandthecranialcavitystuffedwithpapertohelpslowdowndecomposition.Theskinthatmakesupthefaceisthenpulledbackintoplace,thebodyisliterallytossedintoacoffin,makeupthenappliedassomesortoflasttouch.
AsOrozcogoesabouthisworkit’seasytoseehowjadedheis.Amanliterallysurroundedbydeath,hetalksopenlyandnonchalantlytoanyonewhocomesintohisembalmingroom,evengoingsofarastoaskonegirlout.Thisisverymuchjustajobtohim,hedoesn’treallyseemtofeelmuchforhisvictims,thoughatonepointwhenthecorpseofaninfantisbroughtinyoucan’treallytellifhe’sreferringtothedeceasedchildas‘alittleshit’becauseofdisdainoroutofduress.Orozcogoesabouthisbusinesswithalmostruthlessefficiency,cuttingandcleaningasquicklyasabutcherwoulddressacowfordisplayinhisshopwindow.Assuch,he’sdevelopedareputationasoneofthebestinthebusiness,atleastregionally.Asthefilmplaysout,wemeethisassistantandalsosomeofthecompetition,allofwhomhavetheirownoddpersonalityquirksandtraits.
Tsurisakishootsthefilmexploitatively,capturingtheremovedorgansincloseupandmakingsurethatthedeceasedsubjectsgenitalsareeasytoseeandsometimesrightupfrontintheshot.Thefilmisquiteshockingandboundtoupsetsensitiveviewers,butatthesametimesit’saverypowerfulpicture.It’sasmuchapersonalitypiece,ifnotmore,thanitisacollectionofcorpsefootagebutthere’slittledoubtthatthefilmwillberememberedasacharacterstudybeforeit’llberememberedforitsshockvalue.Nothingishiddenfromtheviewer,therearenoclevereditingtricksheretohidethemoreunsettlingvisualsfromthelens.ThecinematographyisasbluntasOrozco’sdelivery,andwhilethefilm,obviouslymadeonalowbudgetandwithlimitedmeans,isrougharoundtheedgesdespiteitsflawsitoffersfascinatinglygriminsightintotherealitiesofthedeathritual.
