Quitefrankly,Iseenoproblem.MerylStreep'sMaryFisherisoneofthescreensfunniestinventions.Itseemsquitecleartomethatsheenjoyedplayingthisrolebecausethereisnootherwaysuchawonderfulperformancecouldhavebeencreated.Onanumberofoccasions,therearelengthyshotswithnochangeofcamerawhereshedrivesthrougharangeofhilariousemotions.Howshehandlesasceneinvolvingadoglickingherfeetwhilesheawakesistremendous.Ifeelitisoneofherstrongestperformances;sheneverturnsitoff,andalwaysdeliversitinthecorrectdosage.
TheissuewithRoseanne'scharacter,Ruth,issheisseenasmanipulative,uncaring,amonsterhellbentonrevenge.Ruth,likeeverythingelseinthispictureisacaricature.ThisisverymuchthesortofrolewewouldexpectfromRoseanne,thedomesticgoddesstakingitallastepfurther.True,shedoeswallowinameanspiritednegativity,butitresultsinapositiveoutcomefornearlyallinvolved.ShetakescontrolofherlifeandliberatesLindaHuntsNurseHopperaswellascountlesswomenthroughherVespaRoseEmploymentAgency.Shereturnslifetothegeriatricsinhercareatanursinghome.AsaresultofRuth'srevenge,MaryFisheratlastbecomesrecognizedastheseriouswritershewishedtofromthestart.WeevenknowthatBegley'sBobPatchettgetshiscomeuppance,andacceptsitwithgraceandhumility.
Therearedozensoftouchesbroughtherewhichmakethisamoviesoenjoyabletowatch.Firstly,thereistheremarkablephysicalchangeinmanyofthecharactersasthestoryprogresses.RoseannegoesfromlookinglikearejectfromafreakshowtoaratherzaftigJoanCollins.LindaHuntandSylviaMileslikewisetransform,andStreepgoesfromapink,frostedconfectionofaromancenovelist,toablackturtlenecked,bespectacledwriterwithagiftforthe"postmodernmetaphor".AcertaintoneissetwhentheestablishingshotofMaryFisher"pinkpalacebythesea"revealsherinitials,MF,emblazonedonthemassivegate.Streepisgivencountlessoccasionstodogreatbusinessforthecamera,asinascenewherehercompletelackofcomprehensionindoinglaundryleadshertoputhalfagallonofbleachandseveraldryersheetsinawashingmachine.Bestofall,shemanagestogivethefingertothe"seriouscritics"whileontheSallyJesseRaphaleShow.Ihonestlydon'tfeelthisfilmisasbadasmanywouldlikeonetothink.Ifyousitback,andletitunfoldasIbelieveitwasintendedto,youwillfindacleverpicturethathasjustthecorrectamountofoverarchedvillainyandcynicismasmanyofourfavoriteblackcomedies.
